Here at razorblue we love developing individuals and giving them the opportunity to grow through career development opportunities. We’ve employed over 6 apprentices during the past 12 years, many of whom are still working with us to this day.

With further education costs spiralling, it’s been great to give individuals of all ages the opportunity to explore a career in the IT industry and equip them with skills to set them up for a career in IT; whether that’s with razorblue or if they decide to move on.

We’re really proud that several of our first apprentices have now moved into permanent roles within the company, and we asked a couple of them to share their experience as an apprentice at razorblue.

Luke McCarthy

Apprentice Developer

1. What does being an apprentice mean to you?
Being an apprentice to me means actively looking to learn as much as I can and working towards my qualifications. I want to progress in my role to the best of my ability. I’m excited to progress both personally and professionally at razorblue.

2. What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship at razorblue?
I enjoy learning new code, new ways to solve problems and being part of a great team.

3. Why razorblue?
I chose razorblue because I felt like joining a rapidly expanding company would be beneficial for me, and I wanted to be part of a growing team. I’d heard about razorblue and recognised their aspirations as aligning with mine – to be forward thinking, dynamic and leaders.

4. What are your future career aspirations?
I want to keep gaining new knowledge and become an expert in my role. With razorblue growing, there are always new opportunities and I’m excited at what these may mean for me.

5. What’s your favourite part of your role?
The favourite part of my role is when I’ve been struggling on a problem and finally figure it out; the sense of achievement feels great! There are so many technical experts at razorblue that I always know I can learn from others and ask questions to help me.

6. How do you feel you have developed as an individual?
I feel as though my teamwork skills have improved hugely, as well as feeling a lot more organised and structured with how I manage day to day tasks.

7. What would you recommend to anyone wanting to become an apprentice?
It’s hard work, but it’s definitely worth it! I’m very happy in my role and am glad I chose to do the apprenticeship. Thank you razorblue!

Jez Cajiao

Client Support Engineer – Implementation

1. What does being an apprentice mean to you?
I had to make a career change after a workplace accident cost my first profession. I feel so lucky to have been introduced to Dan who offered me a second chance in career, taking me on board as an apprentice and welcoming me to the world of IT, which I have found I absolutely love!

2. What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship at razorblue?
The fact that every day is different and I’m always learning. I spend a lot of my time on the road, and I enjoy the fact that I’m meeting clients and travelling around the country seeing razorblue’s IT Solutions in use.

3. Why razorblue?
As I’m not straight out of school, I was struggling to find a company who believed in my potential. I was told that I was too old by other companies, however upon meeting Nick Smith, one of razorblue’s account managers who introduced me to Dan, they both saw my potential and we decided that there was an excellent future ahead for me at razorblue.

4. What are your future career aspirations?
I’m happily growing into my role; my aim is to be fully qualified as an Infrastructure Engineer and then I will look into my future and see what opportunities arise. I’d love to stay working for razorblue.

5. What’s your favourite part of your role?
The fact no two days are the same; I am constantly in different places, meeting new people and I’m on the road! If you see a razorblue van around, there’s a good chance I’ll be in it!

6. How do you feel you have developed as an individual?
I am learning to learn again, and it’s been a big surprise that I am enjoying it. A career change wasn’t something I was thinking about a few years ago, however as they say, everything happens for a reason. Right now, I’m very happy to be working as part of razorblue’s incredible team!

7. What would you recommend to anyone wanting to become an apprentice?
Do it! Don’t worry about the reputation, being a ‘lowly’ apprentice is a great opportunity to learn! Whether you’re young or old, fancy a career change or to try your hand at something you’ve always aspired to do, just do it! I did, and I wouldn’t look back.
