Tim Sedman, Senior IT Officer

Ryedale District Council provides services for over 52,900 residents, as well as local businesses and tourists. The Council is responsible for an area of 575 square miles, ranging from busy market towns to hill farms.

The Council has 200 computer users over four locations and a number of home workers. Coupled with ever increasing security requirements, Ryedale District Council needed an IT solution that was flexible and fully tailored to their needs.

The challenges

As a public sector organisation, Ryedale District Council was subject to tight budgetary restraints and had limited internal resources.

Their in-house IT team had previously taken care of their needs, however due to the number of changes that had taken place in the world of IT security, this was becoming unmanageable.

A solution was required to meet GCSX CoCo and more recently PSN security compliance.

razorblue’s results

razorblue assessed Ryedale District Council’s requirements and in-house capabilities to offer a bespoke solution which would meet all of their needs.

Compliant VPN and two factor authentication mean that staff can access the Council’s network securely from home and other off-site locations.

New firewalls, a more secure wireless network and web filtering were implemented to protect the internal network and the data that resides within it.

razorblue also provided their MailShield hosted spam, phishing and virus filtering service to ensure that all mail entering the council is clean before it even arrives.

The council subsequently met all of their CoCo & PSN compliance requirements and Razorblue continue to provide ongoing management and support under one of their Managed Security contracts, ensuring any changes follow a detailed risk assessment procedure.
